Branching Out
We are not locked into our own Origin Core. We may spend our Potential learning into the other Cores to diversify the potential of our characters. Doing so may be helpful at lower levels, but it is good to keep in mind this ability to multiclass is quickly outshined by putting points into Effect Trees which specialize our characters in different ways. That brings us to the topic of Branching Out. Re-Specialization.
“Everyone is a mix of talents. We may or may not be the best or worst at one particular type of task, but able to complete the goal at hand is more important than perfection.”
Respec
Effect Tree Reserialization
Getting rid of Effects we don’t want or use to open us up to customize our characters is a relatively short process. Reserialization is mostly for unlocking more costly actions and effects when we’ve accumulated enough Potential.
Eligibility
Any Action or Effect which was granted instead of unlocked can not be Reserialized. The following list features the main conditions blocking reserialization. This list may not be altered in any way.
Actions and Effects granted by Species or Origin Core.
Actions and Effects granted by Items, Quests, Mantles, or Pantheon.
An Action or Effect which is Unlocked and states it may not be Pruned.
Actions and Effects which are a requirement for another Action or Effect you currently have Unlocked.
Actions and Effect with additional Abscission or Prune requirements you do not meet.
Abscission
This form of Respecialization is used for Unlocked Actions or Effects related to items, equipment, and crafting recipes which are not part of Effect Clusters or Effect Trees. Potential from Abscission may be spent immediately upon completing the Routine Reserialization or simply added back to the Unspent Potential of your character.
Activation
Routine Reserialization: 1 Routine Path
Effect: Lock one Action or Effect which is unrelated to an Effect Tree and reclaim the Potential Spent on it.
Prune
This form of Respecialization is used for recovering Potential from Effect Trees and may take several Routine Paths to complete.
Activation
Routine Reserialization: 1 Routine Path per 50 Potential Refunded.
Effect
Reclaim up to 50 Potential from 1 Unlocked Effect Tree Canopy, Crown, Stem, Branch, or Root. If this is sufficient to Lock the Effect, the Effect is Locked, and you return the Potential to your Unspent Potential. If this is insufficient, track the total Potential reclaimed.
Caveats
No other Routines may be performed during Pruning until the Effect is Locked.
Potential reclaimed by Prune may only be spent once the Effect being Reserialized is fully Locked.
Any single activation of Prune may only apply to one Action or Effect.
Once the process has begun, any Actions or Effects associated with the Effect are no longer activatable unless the Potential is returned to the Effect. Returning the Potential to the effect takes only 1 Action Slot, but fully restores the effect to the character and all Prune done so far is lost and the character must start over.
Rising to the Challenge
The Story Guide may throw any number of situations the party may be ill equipped to handle. Hard general checks combined with taking a day or two to learn a new skill may be the recipe the players need to follow to knock out an obstacle they’re facing. With recission being an option, swapping out effects trees, replanting skills and diversifying our characters in new ways gives us the opportunity to face changes in the campaign and setting. All at the cost of a little downtime to study against the new threat or challenge.
By Design
We don’t need to change our characters mechanically to face every situation. Being well branched out to cover most situations will happen through the selection of effects by the party members. Most times, there is already a player at the table with the tools in hand to make their character shine in a scene with no downtime. There is also the issue of time sensitive events. The Status Quo is always changing.
